For more years than I care to mention but are measured in decades now, I've been reading the Usenet group comp.risks ... though to be honest it has been almost as long that I've been reading the emailed digest, having stopped using Usenet directly long ago), it purports to be about the risks introduced into society because of or as a result of computers. I've a great deal of respect for PGN, the longtime moderator of the digest and world-wide thought leader around computer risks, trust and provable identity -- fascinating guy who also likes puns, a lot of puns! And most of them are clever and funny (not groaners). I highly recommend the mailing list, PGN does a great job of keeping the discussions relatively short, combining attributions from multiple submissions and not the text, and other good editing techniques. A digest version comes out whenever PGN deems there is enough content. In any case, PGN has recently delivered a talk at the NIST ID Trust conference that seems mighty relevant to GATE
Village. http://www.csl.sri.com/users/neumann/idtrust09+x4.pdf While those are his full notes for his presentation, clearly you "had to be there" to get the full story. My point here was really to tell you about RISKS, and so here are the full details (as appended to every digest email). The ACM RISKS Forum is a MODERATED digest, with Usenet equivalent comp.risks. => SUBSCRIPTIONS: PLEASE read RISKS as a newsgroup (comp.risks or equivalent) if possible and convenient for you. The mailman Web interface can be used directly to subscribe and unsubscribe: http://lists.csl.sri.com/mailman/listinfo/risks Alternatively, to subscribe or unsubscribe via e-mail to mailman your FROM: address, send a message to risks-request@csl.sri.com containing only the one-word text subscribe or unsubscribe. You may also specify a different receiving address: subscribe address= ... . You may short-circuit that process by sending directly to either risks-subscribe@csl.sri.com or risks-unsubscribe@csl.sri.com depending on which action is to be taken. Subscription and unsubscription requests require that you reply to a confirmation message sent to the subscribing mail address. Instructions are included in the confirmation message. Each issue of RISKS that you receive contains information on how to post, unsubscribe, etc. => The complete INFO file (submissions, default disclaimers, archive sites, copyright policy, etc.) is online.
